Adventure holidays in New Caledonia are geared towards mountaineering, caving, canoeing, horse riding and hiking around the huge mountainous island of Grand Terre. You'll find plenty of mountain trails and remote tribal villages to visit in the north of the island, with some huge tracts of wilderness to the south and east of Noumea. The eco centre of La Foa and Sarramea in central Grand Terre is well set up with adventure tours. Beyond Grand Terre, adventure holidays are limited and rather tame although in the Loyalty Islands, tribal village interaction is both easy and accessible.

Unlike its neighbours Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Fiji, scuba diving is limited despite boasting one of the worlds longest coral reefs. The best diving can be found off the west coast of Grand Terre, accessible from the coast 2 to 3 hours drive north of Noumea. Holiday divers should be more than happy with the coral reefs around the Isle of Pines and Noumea.

Surfing in New Caledonia is also limited compared to the phenomenal surfing breaks in Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti.

The following accommodations are well placed for experiencing adventure in New Caledonia:

Chez Ihage Huts, We, Lifou, Loyalty Islands
Euro € 18 - 39 per couple

Chez Ihage is collection of budget tribal huts in the village of Luecila facing a beautiful lagoon – it’s less than a minute walk to the long sweeping sandy beach of We. This is a great option for backpackers and budget travellers looking to enjoy cultural interaction as well as having easy access to the beach and snorkelling lagoon.

Hotel Evasion, Sarramea, Inland, Grand Terre
Euro € 156 per couple

Hotel Evasion is a delightful rainforest retreat in the charming tropical mountains of Sarramea, twenty minutes inland from La Foa or a two hour drive north of Noumea. This boutique retreat offers ten private bungalows in landscaped garden, a swimming pool, restaurant and spa.

Koulnoue Village Resort, Hienghene, Grand Terre

Koulnoue Resort is located a few kilometres south of Hienghene and its scenic coastline. With 50 rooms in duplex bungalows and set in a large coconut plantation fronting a pretty beach, Koulnoue is a good choice for families looking for an affordable beach holiday or for travellers exploring this scenic region of Grand Terre.

Naina Park, La Foa, Inland, Grand Terre
Euro € 80 per couple

Naina Park is set in leafy gardens on the outskirts of La Foa town on the dry west coast of Grand Terre, two hours drive north of Noumea. Ten individual bungalows, traditionally designed but with modern interior furnishings make this a good spot for adventurous travellers looking to explore the nearby rivers and mountains.

Nengone Village Resort, Mare, Loyalty Islands
Euro € 123 - 229 per couple

Nengone Resort is a small boutique resort fronting a secluded white sandy beach on the south coast of Mare. With 18 traditional bungalows with stylish interiors, a swimming pool and good restaurant, Nengone makes the perfect base for exploring the wonderful beaches and sights of Mare.
